Cervecería La Sureña

A few weeks before I arrived in Spain, a restaurant called "La Sureña" opened not far from my future apartment. La Sureña literally means the southern girl, but inside you'll find a bunch of typical "authentic" southern Spanish dishes ranging from seafood, to ham and pheasant. The aspect that makes this restaurant stand out to me is the atmosphere it provides. It's wholly centered around the social aspect of the eating experience; you can meet up with your friends, or go there with your family and the clean, casual feel of the non-traditional nautical veneer draws you into the experience.

The menu has a great selection Raciones, small dishes that are meant to be shared. Raciones are popular not only for their taste, but also for the two-for-one pricing on Thursdays and Sundays, and on these days it's advisable to arrive before the lunch and dinner rushes, because the local reaches capacity quickly and you'll find yourself standing and eating. There are a few stand-out items that seem to be on everyone's order slips, and not without good reason:

  • Lágrimas de faisán - Literally: Teardrops of Pheasant, actually: delicious, breaded morsels of pheasant with an addictive dipping sauce.
  • Croquetas de jamón - Ham croquettes: bite-sized croquettes breaded with ham filling inside.
  • Jamón ibérico - Probably the most ubiquitous Spanish dish of all, freshly-sliced cured ham right off the leg.
And what better compliment for these dishes than a Cubo de cerveza? La Sureña is a Cervezería after all. Three euros gets you five little bottles of Mahou in a bucket of ice, which also happens to be one of the logos of the restaurant.  Overall, La Sureña is one of the best places to stop in for a quick bite to eat (in between the lunch and dinner rushes that is), the menu has enough variety for everyone to have their choice of authentic southern cuisine, and the modern vibe of the restaurant will keep you coming back for more.
